Ten Things This Tuesday

Tuesday, October 31, 2006
"Without a struggle, there can be no progress."- Frederick Douglass

Well, Happy Halloween, people. I just had some bite-size Snickers. I'm scared about what part of my gut the fat will show up at. And speaking of scaring me...

Ten things that I've realized scare me.
1. Taco Bell. I heard that even the meat is hydrated before cooked. What in the world do they do with the tacos?
2. My English professor. He had us sing "Happy Birthday" to Keats. I adore him as a professor, but that was awfully peculiar. I'm beginning to wonder if there may be a Keats cult somewhere on earth. Wouldn't surprise me. Let's face it, if there is a cult on...
3. Charles Manson, who is an awfully scary guy, why not on someone as nice as Keats! They would subversively call it a "society" of some poetic notion, sure, but still... I'm just sayin'... It could happen.
4. Saws. The movies and the instruments. I went to the movies with a few people. They went to see "Saw 3" and I told them that the requirements to see a scary movie were the following: I have to get drunk (top-shelf drunk, thankyouverymuch), a man has to be strong enough to handle my screaming, and I have to have a man sleep with me for the next week. I went to see "Jet Li's Fearless." (I refuse to think that someone was trying to tell me that no man would sleep with me. I'm just sayin, people.)
5. Me naked. Okay, I have to defend myself. I've got purdy legs and a nice jaw line, but in between... well, I'm sure I could make a movie from what's between that would scare the bejeezers out of someone.
6. Masks. Yup, people. Masks can be really creepy. There is a window in my dorm that has a green head in the window, and if you took a really quick look at it, it would scare you, too. I have seen people jump out of their skin seeing it. And yes, women with too much makeup qualifies under this scary thing.
7. Women with too much makeup. No, I'm not being redundant. They scare me just that much.
8. The next month. I can't believe it's November already. I'm afraid of how my classes are going to come together. I've got half a mind to drop a class because I've got a C- in it. I'll have to take something like that again next semester, though, so I might as well get it over with, huh... Fine, I won't drop it, but if my grade gets any lower, I'm blaming all of y'all for it!
9. The fact that there is a guy on this campus that is so darn cute that I'd consider doing the horizontal hustle with him, but I know he is too dang young. My motto is "don't 'date' anyone that is old enough to be my father or young enough to be my son." However, since my mama didn't get pregnant with me until she was 24...
10. Any blond who has brunette eyebrows. I mean what's the point? Bonus scary if their roots are showing. Trifecta bonus if they are male.

Bet I Can Make Someone Jealous...

Monday, October 30, 2006
"The only demand I make of my reader is that he should devote his whole life to reading my works."- James Joyce

Hey, I like that...

Here's the thing. Today, on October 30, 2006, I was walking to the library when I looked at a cotton-ball fluffy sky. Something hit me and I went with it. I dropped my book case, dropped my purse, lain on the nearest piece of grass, and gazed until I lost my vision in the clouds.

Today was not too hot nor too cold. It was juuuuuust right.

What the Sam Hill Is My Problem?

"Discipline without freedom is tyranny; freedom without discipline is chaos."- Cullen Hightower

Well, heck, I'll tell you what my problem is. I haven't been near my computer all weekend. I thought about coming to do a post, but it was a freaking fleeting thought. Frankly, I feel dirty about it. I really feel dirty about having all weekend to study for a Spanish quiz and write a two-page paper and not doing either one of them until Sunday evening. On an upnote, I fell asleep with two men in my dorm room. Another thing that happened is that a small firestorm of racial tension was lurking, so I decided to write an opinion about it. It consumed my thinking for quite a while. I was relieved to get it done, but I am afraid that people will brush it off instead of getting stirred up about it.

I've been trying to work on my poetry. I was reminded of a stream of consciousness that I found and I will probably put it here. I have to seriously think about doing it, there is no punctuation and sometimes that can be a little disturbing to read. The subject matter would not make it any easier.

I'm thinking about how I'm going to do this semester. There is a grant that was given specifically for Juniors (my classification) who are Mississippi residents (hey, I'm one of those, also) who want to travel abroad (I'd like to go to Costa Rica to really learn Spanish) and have a 3.0 cumulative GPA (woops, mine is only 2.92). Hopefully, I will be able to pull up that .08.

So when you see that I haven't been around to post even a default Daily OM post, you know that there is something going on with me. I promise I will try to do better.

I'm going to go and write that down 100 times for my punishment. I miss you guys!

Ten Things This Tuesday

"Hell hath no fury like a bureaucrat scorned."- Milton Friedman

So, I've been really busy on my break. A girl's gotta rest, you know. Ironically, I've been studying. I've been catching up on some work, doing some reading, and working at the library here on campus. Frankly, I'm going to eke out a list of random thoughts...

Ten things that crossed my mind while sitting at the library:
1. If you ever get a job at the library as an assistant, don't think that you'll get to study.
2. I saw a squirrel jump like a rabbit. Peculiar.
3. Then it stood on its hind legs. Made me think of that character on "The Lion King." No, not Mufasa.
4. Gosh, if I were 20 years younger...
5. Or maybe only 15 years younger...
6. Heck, who am I kidding. There's got to be a good-looking guy that is willing to be with an "older woman"...
7. Yup. I really thought that in the library. Can't tell you why, but I did.
8. Honest.
9. My life has completely shut down; the television cable is off throughout the whole campus and I can't get a signal anywhere on campus on my cell phone. How am I supposed to live?
10. I'm looking out of the window at three squirrels at the same time. Isn't that a lot? I think we could get attacked by swarms of squirrels. I can see the headline now: "Campus Mauled by Killer Squirrels"...

Okay! Got some reading to do! Plus, I need to justify that I'm not as crazy as I appear.

Ooh! Look! A Chad Hanging in My Square!

"There is one right I would not grant anyone. And that is the right to be indifferent."- Elie Wiesel

So, this is Chad. Chad is a humorous chap. He has an interesting point of view, that Chad does. He does have adult language. He and I are on opposite sides of the World Series (not that I even watch baseball, but I lived in St. Louis for a long time, so I have ties there). The Chad is a witty fellow, though. And he's let me sit in his square, so it's only fitting that I let The Chad be the blogger of the week. Besides, he was the earliest bidder and a previous bidder.

Please give the Chadster a click. You'll thank me for it. Don't worry, I'll be here when you get back. Promise.

Consolation Prizes for My other Bidders

"Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go."- William Feather

I'm a shady person. I set up a bid and don't get back to it. When I do remember that I actually did it, it was too late and the ones who bidded on me must think I'm a cad.

Darn it. I guess I am.

Spank me.

On second thought, no. One of us might enjoy it.

I digress.

So these are the people who I did not choose. I apologize, but the winner had previously bidded, so he's got dibs for the box. Thank you for bidding, and if any of you bid again soon (and I actually remember), you will get priority!

Pictures from My World Bozette has an adorable blog, including links to support the troops and a pic of The Crazy Horse replica bust. Give them a click.

From Tracie She's a newbie. I adore the banner pic, she has a new lover, and if I were not in a library right now, I would have howled laughing at the boiled peanut story. Please give her a click.

Dead Puppy No. I have no idea why Lexile named her blog that, but dad gum it, she's worth clicking on! It sounds like a sick joke--a Texan in Sweden--but that's what she is. The "punchline" is apparently, she is not the only one! She's a snapshot junkie with an interesting insight. Click on her.

Volitile Lunacy Contains adult content. I'm sorry, but for right now, I'm at my job, and her site is so verbally racy that I have to wait until I get to my computer to read it and tell you about it!

Thank you very much for bidding. Please come back by for a visit and say hello.

A Daily OM Dose of Thought

"For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong."- Henry L. Mencken

Outlining Your Intentions
Making A List Of What You Want

The universe is aware of both the concrete goals we actively pursue and the nebulous dreams we have not yet begun to refine. Neither our struggles nor the daydreams that inspire us are beyond the range of universal perception. Yet to manifest our aspirations, we not only need to know what it is we generally wish to achieve; we also need to clearly articulate these aims to ourselves and the universe. When we create a list of what we want, citing each item in as much detail as possible, our aspirations take on new substance. What was once a mere wish becomes real and achievable when put into words. As you pour the contents of your heart and soul into your list, your well-defined ambitions become a part of you, and the universe responds to your new determination by placing opportunities related to your objectives in your path.

Whatever the nature of your desires, your list can help you channel your intellectual and emotional power into your efforts to realize them. The list you create should not simply be a record of your individual goals. Rather, it should be a comprehensive, exhaustive catalog of each target you want to reach and your reasons for aiming for them. This may mean that your list will encompass many pages of text, since when you write down and review your ambitions, you empower yourself to more accurately direct your goal-realization efforts. You then also have a framework in place that helps you distinguish success from setbacks. If you keep your list in a convenient spot and review it daily, you will inadvertently reaffirm your conviction to your aspirations, demonstrating to the universe that you are truly devoted to your chosen path while keeping your objectives fresh in your mind. If you have an altar, this would be a great place to keep your list.

As you compose your list, try not to edit or judge what you have written. Some of what you want may seem outlandish when considered in the context of your current circumstances. Whether you are destined to fulfill the items on the unique long-term agenda you create in a year, 10 years, or 20 years, if you are free with your ideas and understand that you may not bring these dreams into the realm of reality for some time, your list will attract the universe's benevolence even as it energizes and inspires you.

"Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed."- Anonymous

Using Your Power

Self-Determination

Our lives are defined by the decisions we make each day. When we choose one option over another, whether we are selecting a restaurant or considering a cross-country move, we shape our lives. The decision-making process can be empowering, allowing us to enjoy the benefits of self-determination. Yet it can also be a source of anxiety because decisions force us to face the possibility of dissatisfaction and inner conflict. As a result, many of us opt to avoid making decisions by allowing others to make them for us. We consequently turn our power over to spouses, relatives, friends, and colleagues, granting them the stewardship of our lives that is ours by right. Though the decisions we must make are often difficult, we grow more self-sufficient and secure each time we trust ourselves enough to choose.

Ultimately, only you can know how the options before you will impact your daily life and your long-term well-being. Within you lies the power to competently weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each selection. Even if you feel incapable of making a decision, your inner wisdom and your intuitive mind will give you sound counsel if you have faith in yourself. Try to come to your own conclusions before seeking the guidance of others, and even then, treat their suggestions as supplementary information rather than votes to be tallied. Before making your choice, release your fear of wrong decisions. Perceived mistakes can lead you down wonderful and unexpected paths that expose you to life-changing insights. If you can let go of the notion that certain choices are utterly right while others are entirely wrong, you will be less tempted to invite others to take the reigns of your destiny.

When your choices are your own, you will be more likely to accept and be satisfied with the outcome of those choices. Your decisions will be a pure reflection of your desires, your creativity, your awareness, and your power. Since you understand that you must live with and take responsibility for your decisions, you will likely exercise great care when coming to conclusions. As you learn to make informed and autonomous choices, you will gain the freedom to consciously direct the flow of your life without interference.

Everything In Procrastination

Tuesday, October 17, 2006
"As in political, so in literary action a man wins friends for himself mostly by the passion of his prejudices and the consistent narrowness of his outlook."- Joseph Conrad

Okay, so I am not sure I want to say this, but hey! I love you guys, so I'm just going to put it out there.

My roommate moved out of our dorm room and I haven't been the same since.

I'm not going to bad-mouth her. One, it would be too easy, and she is not here to defend herself. I'm okay with not saying anything bad about her. That said, I've been sleeping like a cat, staying up late, watching television (oh my goodness, I'm watching "The Young and the Restless" again), and studying only when I need to push myself, then I leave the room to do it!

What is the point I'm trying to make? I do better under angst then when I'm relaxed. Weird, huh...

I'm doing okay, though. My Spanish is not as hot as it should be, but I am going to get better at it. I've bought too many index cards and turned them into flash cards. I even color-coded them to differentiate the chapters. Okay, back to my homework.

Ooh! I got a hot pot on sale for seven bucks at "Tarr-jay"! Those suckers can boil water awfully fast!

A Daily OM Dose of Thought

Monday, October 16, 2006
"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards."- Vernor Sanders Law

Seeing Beyond The Unknown
Fear Of Losing What We Have

One of humanity's biggest fears is losing what we have. It is healthy when fear of loss helps us take steps to protect what we have worked hard to attain, but it is unhealthy to continue to fear something we can do nothing about. We need to remember that focusing our energy on fear can actually create what scares us, and holding tightly to what we have keeps us from participating in the universal flow of abundance and instead creates stagnation. Since we can only really control our thoughts and our responses, gaining proper perspective may be key to conquering such fears.

The letters of the word "fear" can be used to stand for "False Evidence Appearing Real." Fears of being separated from something or someone we feel we need for our security or happiness comes from a delusion-a distorted way of understanding ourselves and the world around us. When we understand that possessions are only representations of the energy at work in our lives, we can shift our attention to the right and proper place. We can stop fearing loss of money or success because when we understand how it is created, we can always create more. We can stop fearing loss of possessions when we realize that they are not the source of our joy or well-being but only icing on our cakes. And when we understand the energy of love, we need not hold anyone too close for fear of losing them for we know that love does not diminish when it is given or shared but expands beyond boundaries of time or space.

By focusing our light on our fears, they are revealed as mere shadows that disappear in the presence of mind and spirit. We can choose instead to direct our thoughts and creative power toward things of true value-love, abundance, peace, passion, and joy. These are energies that are always available to us when we place ourselves confidently in the universal flow of abundance.

"If one tells the truth, one is sure, sooner or later, to be found out."- Oscar Wilde

This lovely lass is the owner of Green, a Beginning. Rache is in England and hopefully loves children, because that is what I grasped is her occupation as a nursery nurse. I hope that she is still easy going after she sees that I've got her pic on my blog! You have to admit though, her fiery hair looks lovely on my rosy background, don't you think? I had to choose her because she was the first person that requested a bid (which is my mode of choosing) and she has a good looking dish on her blog.

Her blogs do include the most adorable dialogue with kids and rules and BE radio. I do hope you click on her space.

Now go on, click on her. Shoo! I promise I'll be here when you get back. Honest.

Consolation Prize for the Other Bidders

"I am not bound to please thee with my answer." - William Shakespeare

Gosh, I'm so bad. I haven't had a chance to breathe. I am beginning to hate school. One minute I'm relaxing, the next minute I'm trying to do several things at one time.

This would be one of them.

That said, I do want to thank the four following bloggers for considering filling my square:

The Blue Panther Experience and I have a bond that I don't even know if he knows: one of my buddies,
SunKingpoet (his Original Man and Across the Sands blogs are in my links--take a look around Original Man and you'll see my mean side! Back to my regularly scheduled plugging), set up his blog. It's real purdy, too. Click on him and link up with him! Check out to see if he's going to become a winner next month. Look at him and you'll see what I mean.

Adventures in Everyday Life (Contains Adult Language) Any woman that has Wonder Woman holding things down at the top is worth a peek, don't you think? Her Flikr.com pics are sooooooo cute!

Meltwater. Torrents. Meanderings. Delta. Another SunKingpoet connection here. Matthew was one of Across the Sands first guest posters. The pictures are amazing. You have got to check them out!!!

Texas RV Travel Blog
Duh! Take a guess what this one is about! LOL Events that are happening in Texas, that's what it's about. There are some amazing pics there along with a plethura of items to click on about motorhomes and RV'ing. (Recreational Vehicle-ing for those who are not in the know, not that I'm in the know, mind you; I just know, you know?)

Be a good egg and give each of these guys a click They will thank you for it, then they will thank me for thanking you and I'll thank them for thanking me... Well, it is a vicious process, but in the end, there will be some very polite gestures all around.

Just Had to Share...

I swear I was minding my own business, (and no, I haven't done what I said I was about to go do, but I'm gonna as soon as I do this! Promise!) but I happen to see a blog title that intrigued me. I took a look and decided to let you guys have a peek-a-boo. The name of it is called "In an African Minute" and there are a couple of pictures of people rowing that is worth the click. Trust me on this, guys.

Ten Things This Tuesday

"If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."- Thomas A. Edison

Now that's the first thing that came up when I went to random quotes on the site where I get my quotes. Cleck here and see what pops up for you. More than likely, you will find yourself intrigued.

So, what gives with this Tuesday, well, the quote ought to be a clue...

Ten things I should have done by this Tuesday:

1. Gone through several workouts that I let slip by.
2. Bought some body lotion.
3. Shaved my underarms, but I need to...
4. Buy a disposable razor!
5. Gone to see my cousin that I got close to this summer, but if I would have done that I would have had to...
6. Visited my great-aunt, and as much as I wanted to, I really didn't have time to. Hopefully next time.
7. Gotten more caught up with my work, but I had some other work to do.
8. Eaten lighter, though I haven't done too shabbily, but I'm feeling chunky again.
9. Worked on my Spanish flash cards, which I'm about to write up a new chapter of them now. I know I'm procrastinating because I should have...
10. Thought of this list before now!

Okay, time to study. For some reason, I happen to have a busy day and I need to go to sleep. I'm going to start waking up earlier, though and that's a plus. If only I could wake up to Antonio Banderas running through my flash cards instead of doing them alone. Pouting! I'm pouting!

"What one has not experienced, one will never understand in print." - Isadora Duncan

Sorry, guys. You know I love y'all dearly, but I've got a few things going on here. I've been slacking, but not a day goes by when I don't think of you.
Make a good day.

Where You Need To Be
Timing Can Be Everything

Since human timetables quite often do not correspond with universal timetables, it's common for people to feel that life is progressing too slowly or too quickly. We draft carefully composed plans only to find that they fall into place when we least expect. Or, conversely, we are thrust into roles we believe we are not prepared for and wonder how we will survive the demands imposed upon us by unfamiliar circumstances. When delays in our progress kindle pangs of disappointment within us or the pace of life seems overwhelming, peace can be found in the simple fact that we are exactly where we need to be at this moment.

Every person fulfills their purpose when the time is right. If you have fast-tracked to success, you may become deeply frustrated if you discover you can no longer satisfy your desires as quickly as you might like. Yet the delays that disappoint you may be laying the foundation for future accomplishments that you have not yet conceived. Or the universe may have plans for you that differ from the worldly aspirations you have pursued up until this point. What you deem a postponement of progress may actually represent an auspicious opportunity to prepare for what is yet to come. If, however, you feel as though the universe is pushing you forward at too fast a clip, you may be unwittingly resisting your destiny. Your unease regarding the speed of your progress could be a sign that you need to cultivate awareness within yourself and learn to move with the flow of fate rather than against it. The universe puts nothing in your path that you are incapable of handling, so you can res! t assured that you are ready to grow into your new situation.

You may feel compelled to judge your personal success using your age, your professional position, your level of education, or the accomplishments of your peers as a yardstick. Yet we all enjoy the major milestones in our lives at the appropriate time-some realize their dreams as youngsters while others flourish only in old age. If you take pride in your many accomplishments and make the most of every circumstance in which you find yourself, your time will come.

A Daily OM Dose of Thought

"To attract men, I wear a perfume called 'New Car Interior'." - Rita Rudner

Power In Honesty
Staying True To Your Word

Promises are easily made. Keeping them often proves more difficult because when we are pressured to strive always for perfection, we find it simpler to agree to undertake impossible tasks than to say no. Likewise, there is an infinite array of circumstances that conspire to goad us into telling falsehoods, even when we hold a great reverence for truth. When you endeavor to consistently keep your word, however, you protect your reputation and promote yourself as someone who can be trusted to be unfailingly truthful. Though your honesty may not always endear you to others-for there will always be those who fear the truth-you can nonetheless be certain that your integrity is never tarnished by the patina of deceit. Since frankness and sincerity form the basis of all life-enriching relationships, your word is one of your most precious and powerful possessions.

When we promise more than we can deliver, hide from the consequences of our actions through falsehoods, or deny our true selves to others, we hurt those who were counting on us by proving that their faith was wrongly given. We are also hurt by the lies we tell and the promises we break. Integrity is the foundation of civilization, allowing people to live, work, and play side by side without fear or apprehension. As you cultivate honesty within yourself, you will find that your honor and reliability put people at ease. Others will feel comfortable seeking out your friendship and collaborating with you on projects of great importance, certain that their positive expectations will be met. If you do catch yourself in a lie, ask yourself what you wanted to hide and why you felt you couldn't be truthful. And if life's surprises prevent you from keeping your word, simply admit your error apologetically and make amends quickly.

Since the path of truth frequently represents the more difficult journey, embarking upon it builds character. You can harness the power of your word when you do your best to live a life of honesty and understand what motivates dishonesty. In keeping your agreements and embodying sincerity, you prove that you are worthy of trust and perceive values as something to be incorporated into your daily existence.

Ten Things This Tuesday

"You can't shake hands with a clenched fist."- Indira Gandhi

You know what time it is, people.
Ten things that I did not think about this week:
1. Oil prices. Now that I'm on campus, I rarely have to go off campus for anything. Besides, even if I had thought about gas prices, I couldn't get any because of...
2. How broke I am. Okay, so I don't have to spend any money either, but if I had some, I would like to find a way to spend it. I wanna go see Jet Li's last movie, dad gum it.
3. The end of the year. It's just three months away, then next month will be my birthday and I do not want to think about...
4. How old I will be! Geez, I'll be over 40! I mean no more saying that I am 40 and I may have to accept all of these...
5. Young people saying, "Yes, ma'am," all the time. Now that drives me nuts because I look good for my age and it's not like I have a lot of...
6. Wrinkles! Yup. Wrinkles. I'll be getting them soon. I haven't thought about that because I'm pretty darn cute, and sooner or later I will have me...
7. A man in my life. You know, one of those things that you can cuddle up with, that will take out the garbage, hold the door open for you and smile when they look at the way you put rollers in your hair or face mask cream or any of your beauty treatments that you must have. Yup. One of those things.
8. My body. I just played racquetball last Sunday and it was so invigorating! I felt hot and sweaty and thrilled to be able to move like I moved even though I lost which doesn't matter because isn't it about how we play the game? But I do want to go to...
9. My house. I want to see if everything is going okay there. The one thing that I need to do is find my...
10. Cell phone. Until today. I needed to make a phone call and I didn't want to travel nearly a mile back to my room to do it.

Of course, I am now stressing about all of these things simutaneously. Time to work on my classwork.

Well, it's October and I'm still here. Okay, so I'm here by myself, but I'm here! No quote this time; I just

Owning Your Tendencies
Understanding All Sides

Whenever we examine our lives, we examine them from a particular side or angle. Most of us tend to favor one side over the others. For example, we may tend to look at things from an emotional perspective rather than a financial perspective, or we may prefer to think in terms of details rather than the big picture, or vice versa. To a certain degree, this is not a problem, and these tendencies add color to our individual personalities. However, they can also make us one-sided, blind to the many other ways of looking at our situation. Even if we have decided that we are most happy when we focus on one particular side of things, it is always worth exploring the other sides. When we do, we become well rounded, more understanding of other viewpoints, and even more solid in our own.

Perhaps you are a person who tends to see your life in terms of your spiritual well-being. As a result, other concerns such as financial comfort or social standing may not be prominent in your mind as you make decisions. However, taking just a moment to consider those angles will help you in several ways. One, it will enable you to see more clearly what your priorities are and how they influence your life situation. Two, it will enhance your sense of confidence, because you will see your situation from all sides, even as you choose one. And three, it will help you communicate with others about who you are and what you are doing, because you will come from a place of understanding that your own biases and tendencies are unique as are theirs.

Most of us instinctively come at things from a particular angle, and in many cases this is the right way for us. Still, understanding the other angles only strengthens us. When we look at our lives from all sides, we shed light on the big picture, giving ourselves access to many points of view and highlighting more clearly the one we have chosen to take.
