"It's taken me all my life to understand that it is not necessary to understand everything." - Rene Coty

Long time no see, I know. Got a whole bunch of nothing here. Just got through watching the second of the three presidential debates. So here is...

Ten facts I've been wondering about presidents:

1. McCain is not the oldest presidential candidate. Dole was the oldest.

2. McCain will not be the oldest president. Reagan was in his second term. McCain will be the first newly inaugurated lackey.

3. Obama's not the first African-American presidential candidate. Before Al Sharpton in 2004, Douglas Wilder in 1992, Jesse Jackson in 1988 and 1984, Miss Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman (yup, Hilary didn't do anything historical, either) who seriously ran for president. I knew that. Did you?

4. How many political parties have existed in the United States? Too many to count here. Just go to this site for the answer.

5. Clinton--him, not her--should have tried to run for president. Grover Cleveland did. And won.

6. "Teddy" bears were so named not because Theodore Roosevelt looked like one. He was given one.

7. Calvin Coolidge, a man who did not have loose lips, did not use the telephone while in office.

8. Hoover donated his salary to charity. Let's ask if either one of them would.

9. Gerald Ford once worked as a fashion model. I could see that. You could too if you click this.

10. No, you don't have to be a lawyer to be a president. Harding was a newspaper publisher, Andrew Johnson was taught reading, writing, and 'rithmatic by his wife and Carter studied nuclear physics.

"Love and a cough cannot be hid." - George Herbert

So I'm in Mexico. I've got pictures and I'll have to post it for Wordless Wednesday. Until then...

Ten things I learned about what to do in Merida:
1. If you see a mosquito, kill that sucker! It will eat you alive!
2. Don't flush the toilet tissue down the toilet. The septic systems here don't flush down to this mass thingie like they do in the states. They sit in this tank and have to be emptied out by people.
3. Don't drink the water. Seriously.
4. Don't eat the food unless...
5. ...the restaurants are clean (you can tell--the ice has holes in it).
6. ...or during Noche Mexicana--the food is government-regulated.
7. Regardless, do not eat the food unless you want to lose weight the painful way--hurling everything including your own spit.
8. Dirty looks need no translating.
9. Drinking water can save your life--literally.
10. Drink the water. The clean water. Seriously.

"Things should be made as simple as possible - no simpler." - Albert Einstein

So, it's definitely my last Tuesday here...before I graduate!!!!!! I just checked my grades and I got a B+ and two A's! All I have to do is just coast. I'm trying to have a day where I'm not looking at the bad, just the good. That said, here are...

Ten things I can say I have done because of my education at Millsaps College!!!!
1. Read Middlemarch by George Eliot.
2. Learned more about playwrighting.
3. Had a leading role in a play...
4. As the only Black woman in a play set in 19th century Germany!
5. Got my poetry published in a textbook--well, my work was required reading for the next year's incoming students.
6. Was a 40-year-old transfer student living in a dorm.
7. Read Catullus.
8. Co-interviewed Ann Patchett.
9. Took classes by a published poet (two of them--Austin Wilson and Aleda Shirley), an actress/dancer/director, and some frighteningly smart people.
10. Met and chatted with Pulitzer winners Richard Ford and Natasha Trethewey.

BONUS: I'M GOING TO TRAVEL ABROAD!

"The man who sees both sides of a question is a man who sees absolutely nothing."- Oscar Wilde

Do you want to know how much I love you? I love you so much, I was having this conversation with someone, and after it ended, a train of thoughts came to my mind--and it ended with YOU! YES YOU! What kind of jubilant thing was I thinking? Who knows! You were on my mind, and that is all that matters.

Ten things that happened in a dream I had this morning--really!
1. I saw an old friend.
2. Even though she moved to be with the man of her dreams, she went to bed with her female lover in my dream.
3. I was only wearing a towel after showering. A big towel, but a towel just the same.
4. I went to the grocery store wearing only that towel.
5. I came back to the denizen from which I showered--a compound of condos--and decided to go another, what I thought at the time shorter direction.
6. Well you know how those things are made--they all look the same. Of course I did not remember the condo from which I exited.
7. Hoards of people from different sororities and fraternities came from everywhere.
8. One frat guy tried to take my towel away from me.
9. When I tried to kick him, he grabbed my ankle and tried to stick his thingie inside me (family blog or else I would have less tactfully expressed what he was attempting--I know that you know what he was trying to do)! I was appalled! I mean it's been a while, but I do have standards!
10. I determined while having this dream that I was having a stress dream and that I should awaken so I can finish reading The Adventures of Caleb Williams. That said, I couldn't awaken myself out of the dream!

"I have learnt silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers."- Kahlil Gibran

So, I've been thinking about some things. Yes, I am still in that place of my previous post, but I've been thinking of you--how much I love you and want you to be happy and stuff. So, I'm going to make an effort to say what's on my mind that will be pleasing to you.

I'm going to put whatever the *^#$ I want to. Deal with it.

I've thought about going "green" lately. Here's some ideas on it.

Ten interesting ways to go green:
1. Kill fear.
2. Give a stranger a compliment.
3. For no reason, publicly laugh out loud.
4. Dare you to do it for sixty seconds!
5. If someone looks down, ask them if they need a hug. If they do, hug the negatives right out of them.
6. Take a shower this way: spray yourself with water, turn off the shower, give yourself a vigorous scrubby-scrub, rinse yourself.
7. If you're a green thumb, buy a plant to oxygenate a space.
8. If you're not a green thumb, buy a plastic plant to make someone have happy thoughts.
9. Refrain from saying God's name unless you need Him.
10. Stand or sit in a still place, close your eyes, and deeply inhale and exhale five times. Inhale deeply enough to see (and feel) your chest spread in all directions: feel it in your sides, in your back, and from your collarbones to your belly.

"Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves. All progress, therefore, depends on unreasonable people." - George Bernard Shaw

So, two days away from my 24th birthday...okay, okay! So what if the numbers are backwards! I only look a little older than that! Mwahahahahahahahaha! So what will my TTTT be about? Hmmm... I got it!

Ten things I'm thinking about now that I can no longer ignore that I'm actually a forty-something cougar without the cougar body.

1. Eight years until fifty.
2. Eighteen years from sixty.
3. Twenty-one years from the age my mama passed away.
4. I'm going to have a Bachelor's degree in 115 days.
5. Seventeen Saturdays from graduation.
6. Seventeen Mondays from being out of school and unemployed if I don't get a gig shaking and baking!
7. Oh my good googly woogly! Seventeen Saturdays! That's seventeen Thursdays! One hundred fifteen tomorrows!
8. Why is my heart racing?
9. Because I'm going to be sick.
10. Nope! Because I'm going to get my dream in 115 days!

"Beneath the rule of men entirely great, The pen is mightier than the sword."- Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Baron Lytton

Yeah, so what! I pulled a cheapie on you! Like the four of you care. Ha! Take that! And Happy Freaking New Year to You!

Ten quotes that have nothing in common:
1. "What I don't like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day."- Phyllis Diller

2. "There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew."- Marshall McLuhan

3. "Aim at perfection in everything, though in most things it is unattainable. However, they who aim at it, and persevere, will come much nearer to it than those whose laziness and despondency make them give it up as unattainable."- Lord Chesterfield

4. "Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing."- Robert Benchley

5. "Kindness consists in loving people more than they deserve."- Joseph Joubert

6. "A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."- Fats Domino

7. "No man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without at last finding the other end fastened about his own neck."- Frederick Douglass

8. "The advantage of the emotions is that they lead us astray."- Oscar Wilde

9. "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."- George Bernard Shaw

10. "My husband gave me a necklace. It's fake. I requested fake. Maybe I'm paranoid, but in this day and age, I don't want something around my neck that's worth more than my head."Rita Rudner

Ten Things This Tuesday

Tuesday, January 01, 2008
"I'd stay away from Ecstasy. This is a drug so strong it makes white people think they can dance."- Lenny Henry

So what if it's freaking New Year's Day. I was writing about something else, and thought, well shucks, I should do a Ten Things This Tuesday! The people in my head agreed with me. Here goes...

Ten things I will not resolve to do for 2008:
1. Vote for George Bush. Never did. Not gonna start now.

2. Gain weight. I might end up holding myself to that one. Egad.

3. Lose weight. No sense in lying to myself either.

4. Stop smoking. Never started.

5. Stop drinking. I might if we happen to have Prohibition again. I'm the type that always gets caught doing wrong.

6. Get a passport. Y'all are going to have to help me on this. Man, spending $100 on a passport just seems wrong. I'm going to try, but not going to bet the farm on that one.

7. Get published. I've got to learn how first. It seems that there is a protocol to it, and you guys know how confident I am about my writing. Sheesh. I gotta get over that.

8. Become more self-confident. Remind me to tell you what happened to me New Year's Eve. It was so inspirational, and I'm feeling pretty good about myself because of it.

9. Not think of more t-shirt slogans. Thought of one yesterday: "I can lose weight. You can't lose ugly."

10. Stop wishing for horrible things to happen to George Bush. I blame it on the people in my head. I swear I don't think it all by myself. Admit it: you're thinking what I'm thinking. I'm not going to put it on here because I don't want anyone hunting me down as the person who thought it was about time for an assassination attempt.

I didn't say that.

Ten Things This Tuesday (NUMBER 350 FOR ME!!!!!!!!)

Tuesday, December 18, 2007
"If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry."- Emily Dickinson

Ladies and gentlemen (yes, all five of us), I would like to kindly inform you that I have made it through to 350 posts! Yippee!!!!!!

After I get back to school, I'm going to do something educational, and hopefully interesting. At least it is going to be educational and helpful to me and phooey to you if you don't enjoy it. I would tell you that you better like it, dad gum it (family blog, people--no hard core cursing typed here. Heh...)! If you are not interested as I must be for my future as an educated English freak, then uhmmm....like I said, Phooey on you and rasberries in your face, even!

Enough about that. All of you family people have so much stuff to do for the holidays. Well, my unmarried, childless butt has got news for you. Ten things I'm going to do over the holidays and you wish you could do, but you have families and company and guests and children and stuff!

1. Walk around stark nekkid. Yup. I might not even wear houseshoes or footies.
2. Watch "It's a Wonderful Life" 17 times in one day. You know you want to. I can watch it uninterrupted, too!
3. Have take out for Christmas dinner.
4. Sleep late because nobody is waiting for Santa to drop a load before opening presents.
5. Make white hot chocolate with all the nutmeg I want in it. You know you want the recipe. If you ask really nicely, I might tell you.
6. Not make up my bed.
7. Shower and know that there will be hot water.
8. Drink out of my milk jug. No, I don't do that. Well, okay, I do, but only when I'm going to drain it. I swear!
9. Sit down and read a good book while listening to Christmas music. In actuality, I will be studying for my comprehensive exams. No real pleasure in that. If you want to know what my final short list ended up being, ask me, and I'll tell you.
10. Go to the bathroom with the bathroom door open. Yup. I do that sometimes. In the middle of the night. When nobody's around. Just in case someone knocks on the door or something. Okay! Okay! Sometimes I don't close it first thing in the morning either, but that is as far as I'm admitting to!

Ten Things This Tuesday

"The difficulty was that the country in which he found himself was so featureless or rather, that it was crowded with features, all exactly alike." - Willa Cather

While I do enjoy reading a good book every now and then, I am inundated with the number of books that I have to read. In total, I am supposed to have 23 books under my belt by the end of this semester. At least one of the classes (that has only five books) is having snippets read.

Why did I decide that I would have enough time to work on a play on top of all of this? Have I lost my mind? Well, yeah, I know. That has been gone for quite some time, now. You don't have to say it, I know. I'm just saying what in the world got me to thinking that I would actually be able to do all of this? Anyway, want to read with me? Well, that is what my Ten Things This Tuesday will be:

Ten books that I have to read by the end of this semester--in the same class:
1. The Wife of Bath
2. Tom Jones
3. Middlemarch
4. Antony and Cleopatra
5. Anton Chekhov's Plays
6. Absalom, Absalom!
7. Complete Poems and Selected Letters of John Keats
8. The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes
9. Tom Stoppard's Plays 5
10. Paul Fussell's Poetic Meter and Poetic Form

Ten random thoughts:

2. I have some nice people for friends here.
3. I'm a little bratty.
4. I'm cut from a really different cloth, a kind of burlappy-silk.
5. I'm enjoying reading Faulkner when I can.
6. I need to go to work.
7. My room is cute. I may put up a picture of it.
8. I need to comb my hair.

"I am convinced that the majority of people would be generous from selfish motives, if they had the opportunity."- Charles Dudley Warner

Oh my goodness! Last week was interesting! I have to tell you what happened to me in this format!

If someone had told me that I would have done these ten things last week, I would have slapped them!

1. A friend of mine and I pulled over on the side of the road late at night to fix the blow out of a woman
2. who happened to be one of my sorority sisters that pledged me
3. and who is the mother of the current Miss Mississippi!
4. I was given a scholarship that had me in tears--only half of it is spent. Promise! (Okay, maybe more. I did put some of it away, though. Thank goodness I did. I was not expecting to have an amount due in the spring semester for some reason. Egad.)
5. I heard from an old friend,
6. a truck driver, who took me to Houston
7. and when we stopped at a truckers' gas station in Louisiana, I had the best etouffee I have ever tasted
8. and some alligator! (Felt like chicken, but not much of a taste. It was very lean, though.)
9. On the way back, I did some yoga stretching in the bed that was in the back of an 18-wheeler,
10. and I drove an 18-wheeler on the highway for almost 50 miles!

"It is not worth the bother of killing yourself, since you always kill yourself too late." Emil Cioran

Why am I doing this right now when I should be getting ready for work? Who knows...

Ten t-shirts that I'm going to make one day:
1. "Am I crazy even if the voices in my head sound like me?"
2. "Will work for sushi."
3. "I want a hug."
4. "George Stephanopolous for President"
5. "Worry. I don't have it under control."
6. "I'm just happy to be here."
7. "Shhh! You're interrupting the voices in my head!"
8. "If you are reading this, I can tell where you are looking."
9. "It's people like me that keep the beauty continuum in balance."
10. "If you see me, tell me that I said, 'Hi.' "

"Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble" - William Shakespeare

Miss me? I'm sorry. I'm in a Shakespeare class and it's been challenging. In lieu of that ...

Ten phrases you've stolen from Shakespeare:
1.
All the world's a stage
2. Good night, ladies
3. In my heart of hearts
4. Not a mouse stirring
5. Star-crossed lovers
6. Come what may
7. Into thin air
8. Too much of a good thing
9. Elbow room
10. The naked truth

Want to see more? Go to this site. There's a bunch of them.

"Some people stay longer in an hour than others can in a month." - William Dean Howells
"We are shaped and fashioned by what we love." - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Thinking again

Ten thoughts that have been crippling me:
1. What the Sam Hill am I doing at this school.
2. I have to take this Spanish test.
3. I have to go see my great aunt; the way my relatives are talking, she's on her death bed.
4. A semester--four months--of Shakespeare in one month?
5. Are you kidding me?
6. At least I got an A in my Southern Lit class.
7. I've lost all of that philosophical thinking that I was going to do for this TTTT. Geez.
8. The opposite of fear is knowledge--I rehashed it, but I'm trying to convince myself, to believe it.
9. Another rehash (let's face it, I'm forgetful): every thing is better than the fear invested before it.
10. I want my mama. Or some spirit or ghost who can help me answer the Spanish questions that I'm going to miss.

Okay, okay! Stop yelling at me! I'm going, I'm going. Sheesh!

"Did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic insomniac who stays up all night wondering if there really is a Dog?"- Anonymous

Yup. Today's one of those days.

Ten Steven Wright statements:
1. How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

2. Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.

3. When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

4. Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have film.

5. Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

6. Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?

7. A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

8. The severity of the itch is proportional to the reach.

9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.

10. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

"I belong to Bridesgrooms Anonymous - whenever I feel like getting married, they send over a lady in a housecoat and hair curlers to burn my toast for me." - Dick Martin

My sleeping habits warrant this one.

Ten things I do when I oversleep:

1. Forget to put on deoderant. Thanks goodness I'm not a very smelly baby.

2. Wear my shower shoes to class. They are in style, you know. Why they are called "flip-flops" is still beyond me.

3. I put a cap on. I've forced people to get used to it anyway.

4. I don't make up my bed. I end up getting right back in it as soon as I come back to the room, anyway.

5. Brush my teeth before I go to bed. If my teeth feel particularly plaquey (I'm an English major, I can do that) ...

6. Brush my teeth while I pee. When I don't have time to even pee, I'll ...

7. Hold it until I get to class. To avoid being late, I acknowledge my presence by dropping off my books. Then I R U N.

8. Grab something out of the dirty-clothes bin and put them on. Yes, I do check the funk factor, and usually I'm safe.

9. Sleep in my bra. Well, the real reason I sleep in my bra is because the girls do not like to be free. They get all itchy and floppy and stuff. Ladies, you know what I mean.

10. Starve. It's my punishment for being up late and waking up late.

"When a subject is highly controversial and any question about sex is that one cannot hope to tell the truth. One can only show how one came to hold whatever opinion one does hold." - Virginia Woolf

I'm not even sure where this one came from...

Ten things I'd like to read as headlines:

1. "Government Passes Bill to Not Spend Money in Ridiculous Manners"
2. "Gas Prices Keeps Record Low of $1.23 for Record 13 Months"
3. "FDA Approves Keep-Proportionate-Weight Pill"
4. "United States Ranks First in Science and Math for 11th Year"
5. "Gina Kohl Tops Fortune 500's Most Wonderfully Wealthy People"
6. "Economic Indicators Confirm Rich Getting Poorer, Poor Getting Richer; President's 'Age of Financial Conservatism' Affects Trend"

Ten Things This Tuesday

Tuesday, March 20, 2007
"Since we cannot know all that is to be known of everything, we ought to know a little about everything."- Blaise Pascal

Ten things that I just want to haul off and scream at them. Yup. Didn't take me long to get this one done. I almost wrote it yesterday...

1. Pizza is finger food.
2. So are hamburgers.
3. And french fries. Stop using your knives and forks to eat them, you idiot!
4. That funky, flimsy material that you threw on you this morning and got sucked up into the idea that it was stylish is frumpy on you.
5. And you need to wear a slip under it. It is not cute to have flimsy material bunch up on you there.
6. Your urine and fecal material are not anyone's gift to be shared. Flush the toilet.
7. Men, lift the seat before you pee, put it down afterwards. And don't give me that line that women don't have to lift and put down anything. I happen to always put my toilet seat and lid down.
8. If you are going to wear flip-flops, do us all a favor. Trim your toenails, moisturize your feet, and don't let them get too funky-smelling. Yuck.
9. Buy some dental floss, because I'm so sick and tired of seeing you with something between your teeth and then you have the nerve to get defensive when I tell you that you need floss.
10. Do not give me that fake smile. It's ugly and I'd rather not even be bothered with it. Just don't smile at me if you don't want to. I might get offended, but good grief, I'm more offended with that yucky smile. Honest.
