"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." - Ernest Hemingway
I just had to say this. I was listening to the radio when an article came up about two Mississippi bills were shut down in committees. They both were right-to-life bills. One of them was banning the RU-140 (I think) pill--the "oops we didn't have any protection and this ought to cover my becoming pregnant" pill. Some woman was disgusted with the "Mississippi Democrats" because of this. Now I'm going to say as closely as possible what she said:
"I think that the Democrats were ridiculous to not pass these bills because (blah blah blah--stuff that was insignificant...) and they are killing potential voters!"
Hold on just a second. The only reason a Democrat should force a woman to keep a child that she does not want to keep is because they might end up voting for them?????? SCREAMING!!!!!!!

"He who joyfully marches in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice." - Albert Einstein
So, over the last few weeks, I've been morbidly depressed. I've missed completing work in all of my classes, cried in my classes, stayed in my bed for days at a time, not sleep for more than five hours at a time, even suicidal thoughts.
That's the truth, and I'm sticking to it. SCREAMING!!!!!!
I'm dealing with the reasons why I've been behaving this way. For the most part, it's fear. I almost want to personalize it by capitalizing it. Fear and hopelessness has been hovering over me like an umbrella that's raining from under it. I've got stuff that I have to clear out of my head, but when a person deals with believing what others say since your childhood, those thoughts become voiceless--not being able to acknowledge that someone else has been telling me this crap instead of hearing it from my own voice.
Now, I have to ask of a huge favor. If you see my blog, please leave a note. Part of the reason I don't post often is because I really don't think anyone's been reading it. I don't need a pity party or a praising "you'll get through this" message. Just say, "hi." I need inspiration. You are that inspiration for me. I have had many thoughts to write about, but if I write without anyone telling me that they read it, then it's like not knowing if the husband takes out the garbage in the forest.
I'll try to do better. And to that one person who asked me, "now you know."
I still love all five of you.

Happy Birthday to Me. Yuck.

"The gent who wakes up and finds himself a success, hasn't been asleep." - Wilson Mizner
Well, guess what the heck I've done for my 42nd birthday. Let's just say that I'm sad. Instead of going out and having some fun with some people that I may never see again, much less see next year, and instead of going to work for some extra chump change, I did someone a favor. Someone who I know beyond a shadow of a doubt would not do the same for me. Why? (Mind you, I really want to curse and kick something--maybe I'll kick my teddy bear--this is a family blog, so no cursing. Asterisks are another story all together...) I guess the best answer would be because I am a sucker. A doggone sucker.
I woke up this morning and the first thought that came to my mind is, "I hate my life." I decided to swat that sucker right out of my head. I went to work, decided to go to lunch where someone sang "happy birthday" to me, went back to work. I thought I was going to do something fun, when not only did I discover that I that I was not going to have fun, I was also going to be politely removed from the place I went to to have some fun. I can't explain it.
In the meantime, I missed going to a party for not just me, but for three of us who has a birthday today. So I came back to campus to pick up a friend. She didn't tell me that she was going with someone else. Now here's the kicker. I go to someone else's room, and they need me to write something for them. As someone else. What do I do? Write the letter. Took me 90 minutes to make the letter look great. What does she ask me to do? "Gina, I will pay you five dollars." Uh oh. In the year and a half that I've known this woman, I've seen her pull out money ONCE. "Ten dollars." Yeah, right. What do you want... "Would you write my letter for me?" I told her that it was enough to write a letter as one person, now you want me to write a letter for two? I added that I would clean up the letter after she wrote it. "I can't put down what I want to write in my head." Uh huh. Neither can I.
I came to my room, burst into tears because it's my 42nd birthday and not one single present from anybody. I guess I should count one present: God gave me this day.
That was too dad gum sappy. SCREAMING!!!!!

"It is always the best policy to speak the truth, unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar."- Jerome K. Jerome
Well, after what seemed like a thousand years with no ISP service (the sons of nasty dogs went bankrupt "out of the blue") and another two thousand years with very slow service, my college is up and running. Not soon enough since it is our freaking exam week.

So, of course, this note is obviously short. Can I just say that my Creative Writing class has no sense of humor? See if you get the gist of this poem. Then I'm leaving. Senior Seminar final in the morning and I don't know what I'm going to write!
SCREAMING!
SCREAMING!
SCREAMING!
Okay, here's the poem:
Scheduled
Smile you will
or frown someday
when you don’t glance
at the clock after
you hear the quiet slam
of the door against jamb
to know who came home.
Smile you will
or sigh perhaps
when you walk
to the dining room not
because she told you, but
because you hear
the oven door close
smell melted butter
on baked yeast or meal
in her cast iron skillet.
Someday you glance,
hear who will sigh,
perhaps you
hear the door
and smell her
while you discover there are
three definitions of “funk” on page 723.
The answer to the next question is
“page 719.”

"No spring, nor summer beauty hath such grace, As I have seen in one autumnal face." - Nathan Hale
Today, I have to read the first four chapters of Light in August by William Faulkner, absorb the plot of Tom Jones, get an outline in my head for my first Senior Seminar exam (a mock comprehensive exam, the thing we have to take to graduate), two papers, and a partridge in a pear tree.
And why haven't I been writing much?
And why am I still on here?

"There's no reason to be the richest man in the cemetery. You can't do any business from there." - Colonel Sanders
I am high-classed enough to let you know that I am currently studying why New Historicism is important. After that, I will be revising my psychological analysis of Benjy in The Sound and the Fury, and after that, I have to read ephratic poetry. And to show you that my $32k-a-year education ain't goin' to waste, ephratic poetry is poetry whose subject is a picture, portrait, or painting.
And I didn't even look up the definition, either.
Impressed? You oughta be, daggum it. (SCREAMING!!!!!)

"As in political, so in literary action a man wins friends for himself mostly by the passion of his prejudices and the consistent narrowness of his outlook." - Joseph Conrad
Ugh! People can be so rude! SCREAMING!
I went to a Japanese restaurant that had two sides--and two entrances. Mind you, it was the first time I had ever been there. I opened they door and two servers nearly pounced on me.
Listen, I'm Black. I'm accustomed to certain looks--like the one they gave me as if I either did not know how to eat Japanese food or I'm about to be rude and classless. I can even say that I might have asked for it. I was wearing some jeans, a "Big Dog' t-shirt, and my dreaded-looking hair can set some people aback. But they did not have to look at me as if I was going to fulfill their stereotypical expectations.
Anyway, I asked for a to-go menu so I can see what I wanted. I left, got my purse out of my trunk, and went back inside. I wanted to read and have some green tea, maybe order some sushi. One of the servers asked if I wanted hibachi or sushi. I told them sushi and he pointed to the entrance for the other side of the restaurant.
I wasn't going to tell him that this was my first time in that restaurant or that I didn't know there was a second entrance since I parked to where my vantage point only saw one entrance or that I did not understand him when they pointed in that direction the first time, because I'm considerate of people speaking second languages with their heavy accents, I swear I am. I've been trying to speak decent Spanish, but it's just not working. I digress. Again.
One step after I began to walk in the entrance's direction, one of the servers laughed. I continued to walk away. I knew he was laughing at me and not in a kind way, either. I let that slide.
Upon leaving. I went through the same doorway, and the same two male servers were there. One of them gave that head-nudging in my direction as he made a sound. I slowed down my walk so I could stare at that one guy so he would not forget my face and vice versa. I heard, "have a good evening," from the other guy. At a glance I saw a nasty smirk on his face. I stabbed a "truck you" (remember, this is a family blog) look at him, returned a salutation and left. I wanted to do something. Anything. As I was returning to campus, I thought about revenge. Lord, help me I thought and thought. It'll probably be my next Ten Things This Tuesday.

"I will not allow my daughters to learn foreign languages because one tongue is sufficient for a woman." - John Milton
I took my last final exam for the summer last night. Ever have the feeling that time is working against you? Well, I was truly against the gun when I was writing my blue book. I started talking about how reading Shakespeare was like untangling string. UNTANGLING STRING? SCREAMING! What the Sam Hill is my problem? I had so much information in front of me, but nothing to write about. I had an out-of-body experience. I can say that I came up with some interesting tidbits that the professor did not touch on, but still ... Afterwards, I had dinner with the guys. I was the only woman in a class with four men including the professor. He offered me a toast about being the only woman. I had to tell them, "the pleasure was all mine!" LOL I have to say that the other three guys were good looking in their own way, and the professor's cool, also. We drank southern pecan beer and ate pizza. We talked for a couple of hours, and I really enjoyed myself. I know I am stressing out for a reason. I don't expect an A out of the class, but it would be nice to get a decent grade--the class cost me $1650.
Okay. I'm going to go hurl now. ;)

"Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight." - Phyllis Diller
So this morning I had to come back to school. I only got a few hours sleep last night and woke up at 5:55 am (I saw the clock, dad gum it to Sam Hill and back). After some visits, I was a little tired, but knew I could handle staying awake for an hour and get to my dorm room bed for a nappypoo and get up for work--no problem.
I went to McDonald's and got a medium coffee and an egg-and-cheese biscuit. I didn't get halfway back before I had to force myself to pull over and nap. It was raining, it was cloudy--ick. Dad gum it! I want to go to get to school! I've got stuff to do! SCREAMING! Yet, here I am, on the highway with my seat on recline and waiting for my body says, "Okay! Time to go!"
Is it just me? It seems that almost every time I eat something, I lose energy. Sometimes, I just pass out and my body doesn't care where I do it! Anyone wanna tell me why that is?

Can't We All Just Pee Along?
Sunday, June 24, 2007
"I took a lie detector test the other day. No I didn't." - Steven Wright
I'm a woman. A woman that happens to use public restrooms when necessary. Like tonight. I was at a popular restaurant for several hours. I have this thing where I will go to a place to study because I tend to not do it in my room. I was going to a Japanese place, but it was closed, so I went to the Waffle House. I hate going to this particular Waffle House during the time of day I was going because the people there have no sense of cleanliness. I had a feeling that I was going to actually want something to eat, and I did not want that heffa fixing my food, so I drove around and ended up at this kind of restaurant that serves good versions of basic American food--burgers, steaks, catfish ... stuff like that.
I felt like I could get some coffee in a coffee cup since they have busboys that clean the dishes (as opposed to the servers having to serve and wash dishes like at the Waffle House). After several cups of coffee (and yes, I'm finally getting to the point, but come on ... you know me, I wander sometimes) I needed to go pee. I found the ladies' room which had four stalls. I went into one and, heavens to mergatroid and thank the bathroom gods (because I really had to pee), the toilet seat was not peed on and there was an ample amount of toilet tissue for my back forty and other place (no need for too many details--it is [supposedly] a family blog). I did my business (okay, you don't really want to know how I pee, and if you do, then you need to stop reading my blog, you big freak! Okay, not you Dutch Bitch, but anyone else that is entertaining the thought [okay, Renee, not you either] and I mean stop now ... eewww!) flushed, checked that everything went down the hole, washed my hands, took the paper towel that I dried my hands with, opened the door, and returned to my life at the table.
A few hours--and a few more cups of coffee--later, I returned to the ladies' room. The stall with which I became familiar was available. I opened and the bathroom gods switched off their "on duty" sign, because, though the toilet was flushed and ready for seating, there was no more toilet tissue!
Needless to say, I gasped.
I checked the first stall. I will be polite and simply say that it was unflushed.
Gasp.
I checked the last remaining non-handicapped stall. I will simply say that someone missed their aim and felt it necessary to inform everyone else of their bad target practice.
MENTALLY SCREAMING.
So, can't we just all pee along, ladies? Can we not aim and fire in the hole, and if we cannot, can we take care of cleaning up behind ourselves? I mean if you women can clean up behind your babies, you can at least do it for yourself. I'm not asking for much. I don't need to see your leftover pee on the toilet. I don't. Nobody else does. (And if you do, you need to stop reading my blog, you sick freak!) (Okay, not you, Dutch Bitch. And not you, either, Renee.)

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." - Abraham Lincoln
So, what's going on with me? I hate British Literature, at least trying to memorize poets' poems--I got my second exam back in that class and I cried; Journalism's okay, at least I think it is; I have a paper, a presentation, and several journal entries due in my history class--I'm about to work on my part of the presentation now; and Spanish--oh my goodness--I have to have all 14 tenses in my head, formulate sentences better, and a partridge in a pear tree.
That's the reason I've been slacking on my blog, and I'm sticking to it.
On an upnote, I'm thinking about a TTTT for later on today.
You know I love you, right?
